description: | The aim of the research is to analyse multichannel EEG recordings of propofol anesthesia and to develop a novel system for monitoring depth of anesthesia and brain function. From medical point of view our goal is to study the properties of the well defined patterns characteristic to propofol anesthesia (bursts, sharp waves, spindles). The main emphasis is on the dynamics of these properties (their behaviour during the course of anesthesia) and their reactivity to various stimuli (somatosensory, auditory). The interpretation of the results will give us better knowledge about the influence of the most perspective modern intravenous anesthetic agent - propofol - to the functioning of the human brain. The mentioned signal patterns have never been systematically studied before. From technical point of view the project enables to study the effectiveness of several modern signal processing methods (wavelet transform, independent component analysis, nonlinear filtering algorithms, e.g.) in detection of EEG patterns from multichannel recordings. As the result of the project, an expert system for monitoring the depth of anesthesia and brain function will be developed. The past decade has seen an increase of interest in estimating depth of anesthesia on the bases of the EEG signal. Our approach to the problem is novel - it is based on the detection of distinct signal patterns and the analysis of the dynamics of their properties. The system integrates several signal processing methods and applies the methods according to the patterns detected. |
