description: Processing and disposal of the residual sludge of the wastewater plants is a serious environmental problem also in Estonia. The aim of the present study is investigation of waste water treatment processes and development of technologies for the treatment of residual sludge into biosolids which could be used for the production of biofertilizers and biopesticides. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion processes of the residual sludge will be studied using sludge from Tallinn Waste Water treatment plant and from Salutaguse yeast factory. Microcalorimetry will be used for the study and monitoring of the thermophilic anaerobic treatment processes. The hygienic quality and dewatering processes of the stabilized sludge will be monitored. Use of struvites for the removal and reuse of phsosphorous from wastewaters will be studied. Vacuum teatment of the residual sludge of the thermophilic anaerobic processes will be investigated to improve the dewatering processes of the treated sludge. Sludge aftertreatment processes which result in production of biofertilizers and biopesticides production will be studied. Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms and microorganisms suitable for the preparation of biofertilizers and biopesticides will be isolated and studied. System and methods for the development, testing and quality control of the microorganisms facilitating plant growth will be developed. Anaerobic treatment processes of the waste waters containing high amounts of sulfur will be investigated and the optimized scheme for the treatment will be developed on the basis of the laboratory experiments. Reduction of sulfur and its interrelationship with nitrogen metabolism in the treatment processes will be studied.
