description: | The target financed project proposed deals with processes at interfaces and condensed phases. The results of the basic research will be applied in the development of effective environmental technologies. The adsorption of heavy metals on peat and artificial sorbents will be studied, with the aim to elaborate a technology for the removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater and landfill leachate. The co-sorption of metals on various sorbents will be modelled in order to elucidate the characteristics of multielement adsorption. In the frame of this project we continue to develop advanced purification technologies for contaminated waters and soils in order to increase their efficiency and for the purpose to apply the results of these studies in wastewater treatment, in wastewater sludge handling and in the remediation of contaminated soils. The applicability of various adsorbents in the purification of oil-contaminated soils, in the acceleration of composting processes, in the deodoration of composting material and in the reduction of nitrogen losses in composting process will be also investigated. Several electrochemical sensors will be developed and studied, including biosensors for the determination of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and phenolic compounds. New biocatalytically active materials will be used in the construction of biosensors. The processes occurring in electrochemical sensors will be studied and mathematical models describing these processes will be developed and used for the calibration of sensors. |
