| description: | The aim of the study is to elucidate the microbial ecological aspects of the pathogenesis of some chronic infectious (peptic ulcer, recurrent urinary tract infections, chronic tonsillitis) and non-infectious diseases (allergy, heart and vascular diseases). The novel microbiological, molecular, biochemical and immuno-morphological methods are applied. The interaction of host and parasite is determined on the genotype and genes expression level of microbes. There are searched for new possibilities to influence the pathogenesis of aforementioned diseases through improving the microbial ecology of host organism. For that purpose the probiotic lactobacilli derived from Estonians are used and their survival in gut is ensured by selected prebiotic preparations. We expect that the study results allow to use more effective methods for diagnostics and treatment of the chronic infectious and non-infectious diseases. Elaborated functional foods (probiotics + prebiotics) seemingly offer for large populations the possibility to improve the health, at the same time maintaining the Estonian style of nutrition in the European Union. The results of investigations create the basis for high technological projects in Estonia, particularly for the production of native pro-and prebiotics. |
