title: Structure and development of Written and Spoken Estonian
reg no: SF0182571s03
project type: targeted financing
subject: 6. Humanities
status: accepted
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Mati Erelt
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2007
description: The theme includes two sub-themes: a) the grammatical structure and variation of contemporary Written and Spoken Estonian and b) the grammatical and lexical structure of Older Written Estonian and its development. The first sub-theme focuses on the syntactic structure of Contemporary Estonian from the functional-typological perspective and on the basis of text corpora. These studies will serve as a basis for a new syntax of Estonian, which, differently from the previous treatments, will include data about the most important sublanguages and spoken usage and will reveal the more important changes that took place in Estonian in the 20th century. The second sub-theme will focus on the morphological, syntactic, and lexical structure and development of the Older Written Language from the typological perspective. For the purpose, new material will be added to the corpus of the Oldest Written Language, and a one-million word selective corpus of the Older Written Language (1535-1800) will be set up.
