head of project: Jüri Elken
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2007
description: The theme (of physical oceanography) is focused onto investigation of water and matter exchange processes in changing climatic conditions when the role of the north-eastern sub-basins in formation of the Baltic Sea water masses will presumably increase. The aims of the two sub-themes are (1) investigation of long-term changes of oceanographic state of the sea depending on external meteorological and hydrological forcing and of their relationship with processes determining the sea circulation and inter-basin water exchange, and (2) description of physical processes generating favorable nutrient conditions for blue-green algae blooms and estimation of the accompanying nutrient fluxes, determination of the role of physical processes in formation of the summer nutrient regime of the sea. The changes in hydrographic conditions of the Baltic Sea, caused by effects of different aspects of climate change influence on transport and mixing processes, will be estimated by analysis of temporal-spatial data sets, process studies and modeling.
