description: | Recent progress in stratigraphy is best expressed through the revision of the existing correlation charts and introduction of new stratigraphical units based on the internationally approved standardisation principles and geochronology. Due to the unique geological background and detailed regional stratigraphy, the Lower Palaeozoic studies in Estonia have directly or indirectly contributed to the development of global stratigraphical charts of this period. The stratigraphical studies of the last 50 years in Estonia have shown that the regional correlation charts need to be revised in every 10-15 years (the last one has been published in 1987, English version 1994). The goal of this project is to use the new achievements in regional and global geology to produce a revised regional correlation chart based on standardisation principles, including the definition of the boundary stratotypes, which has thus far been mostly used in the definition of the global standards. Conodont and chitinozoan biozonations will be improved with the focus on proper taxonomy and evolutionary lineages. The correlation of regional units with the new global standards will be analysed and refined. The stability and usability of boundary criteria of global units will be tested in Baltoscandia and the result incorporated into the global schemes. |
