description: Nonlinear dynamics, based on mechanics of solids and hydrodynamics, is an interdisciplinary field comprising the analysis of physical processes in much larger range. The spearheads of studies are: (i) influence of microstructure and prestress of solids on wave motion; (ii) macrodynamics of biological tissues (and processes) depending on cell energetics; (iii) soliton dynamics and interaction of surface waves; (iv) inverse problems of photoelasticity and tensor tomography. The absence of additivity due to nonlinear properties of physical fields pertmits to explain qualitative effects in physical phenomena and consequently, to prognose new applications. Within the framework of Estonian R&D strategy it is planned to participate in programmes of two key-areas (biomedicine, materials technology). Basic research within this topic gives rise to applications in material science (photoelasticity, nondestructive testing, impact dynamics), cardiology, and hydrodynamics. Intensive international co-operation from one side and graduate studies from the other side form the basis to consistency of studies. The topic is the essential part of research in the Centre for Nonlineare Studies (CENS) which unites all the research in this field in Estonia. In 2001, CENS has been evaluated as the potential centre of excellence in research.
