title: Formation and changes of the biological diversity under the human impact in different lake types (Estonia-Denmark-Netherlands)
reg no: SF0362482s03
project type: targeted financing
subject: 1.10-1.16. Bio-Geo Sciences
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Zoology and Botany at Estonian University of Life Sciences
head of project: Ingmar Ott
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2007
description: Covering wide range of natural lake types with different human impact, causal relations between biodiversity and functioning of ecosystems will be elucidated. Common database together with partners from Danish National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) and Dutch Agricultural University of Wageningen (RIZA) including ca 1100 lakes will be created. Regarding frequencies of species in communities and in ecosystems as multisize objects, the influence of various factors (human impact, geochemical, morphometrical, geographical factors as well as long-term changes of environment conditions and weather) will be studied. The fast oscillations of functioning and biodiversity in lakes during the restoration process and in lakes after the accidental ecological deterioration (e.g. fish kill) will be followed. Comparative studies of biodiveristy in water bodies with and without water mammals (beaver), able to affect habitat type, will be carried out. In Europe little known biotopes as halotrophic, siderotrophic and karst lakes will be studied. Investistigations in steeply stratified lakes are planned to continue studying short-term migrations of plankton and related efficiency of utilization of resources in parallel mesocosm experiments and in the lake.
