title: Feeding of dairy cows in different periods of energy balance.
reg no: SF0422595s03
project type: targeted financing
subject: 4. Agricultural Sciences
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Animal Husbandry at EAU
head of project: Olav Kärt
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2007
description: Main objectives of the project - to clarify aspects of dairy cows feeding during different periods of negative energy balance - arise from practical need to increase nutritional support in carrying into effect genetic potential of dairy cows. Composition of dry cows ration ensuring ample glycogen reserves at calving without risk of obesity is ascertained. Different ways of reducing lipolysis and its influence on health, fertility and productivity are investigated. Optimal energy to protein ratio during negative as well as positive energy balance is ascertained. Influence of different glycogenic precursors on metabolism is investigated using feeds with various sources of protein, fat and starch. As a result, theoretical bases of ration formation for dairy cows in different periods of lactation cycle is improved enabling to assure productivity, fertility, health and longevity corresponding to genetic potential of cows. Exploitation of the results will increase economic efficiency of dairy farming and competitiveness of the old-established industry in European economic area.
