| description: | Current research project is focused on the influence of natural and human disturbances on the biodiversity and dynamics of forest ecosystems. The area of storm damages, forest fires, pest and disease outbreaks are considerable in Estonia. The research objects are situated in coniferous and mixed forests, also different forest categories are treated (protected, protection and commercial forests). Problems related to forest health, forest utilisation, silviculture and regeneration are regarded as sub-topics. The study areas are permanent sample plots, the additional areas will be established. Interactions of human activities and disturbances are analysed. The main hypotheses for the work are the higher biodiversity created by disturbances, the regeneration of natural communities after disturbances and greater vulnerability of intensively managed forests. The models based on empirical data create methodological background. The efficiency of forest utilisation is evaluated. The recommendations for alternative silvicultural and forest utilisation technologies enhancing diversity are produced considering appropriate ecological and economical scale. |
