| description: | The topic represents a logical continuation of previous research done at the Dialectological and Finno-Ugric departments of the IEL. The methodological basis is a synthesis of result gained from previous studies of Estonian dialects, cognate languages and linguistic contacts. The aim of the studies planned is a further specification and correction of the present conceptions of intralinguistic developments as well as of the historical components of the Uralic, Indoeuropean a.o. language layers interlaced in the Estonian language. The topic comprises research into Estonian dialect lexis and dialect geography as well as problems of diachronic relations between Estonian and its cognate and contact languages. Both theoretical results to be published in article series and dictionaries as applicable output are envisaged to provide a basis for future in-depth studies of the historical development of the Estonian language. |
