title: RELATIONS AND INHERITANCE OF QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE TRAITS OF YIELD, DISEASE RESISTANCE AND QUALITY IN BREEDING OF FIELD CROPS FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
reg no: SF0092485s03
project type: targeted financing
subject: 2. Engineering
status: accepted
institution: Jõgeva Plant Breeding Institute
head of project: Mati Koppel
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2007
description: Objective of investigation is:
achievement of novel theoretical knowledge for breeding of field crops suitable for sustainable production, creation and testing of initial breeding material, and
application of new breeding methods.

Gene and chromosome tests, marker selection and somatic hybridization are put into practice together with classical breeding methods. Research on breeding of potato, cereals, pulses, legumes and grasses is carried out with aim to increase disease resistance, yield quality and improve tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Increased nutrient uptake efficiency, resistance to unfavorable environmental conditions and stable disease and pest resistance are of essential importance. Varieties adapted to local climatic and soil conditions enable to decrease utilization of fertilizers and pesticides and thus reduce potential harmful influence to environment. High quality varieties permit reduction of energy and raw material consumption in processing. Realization of research objectives is carried out in collaboration with several Estonian and foreign research institutes.
