| description: | The empirical component of this research theme is sustained by the source materials deposited at the Cultural Archives of Estonia, which include textual documentation from the 17th century onwards, with particularly rich deposits from the 19th and 20th centuries. The goal is an intertextual analysis of texts, persons, myths and other staple images of Estonian literary history, while providing a wider social context, which should enhance literary, cultural and historical studies. This theme finds its methodology from cultural anthropology, sociology, cultural and gender studies, and re-investigates fictional and non-fictional (manuscripts, memoirs, lifestories, correspondence) texts deposited in the Archives. Such new-historicist approach to texts should enable new and broader research perspectives. The focus of research is on various ideologies that have inspired Estonian literature in different periods, history of significant cultural institutions (e.g. Writers' Union, Cultural Archives, periodical "Postimees" or the formation "Young-Estonia"), agency of their establishment, historical re-investigation of biographies of symbolic persons in the creation process of Estonian literature (Kreutzwald, Hurt, Tuglas, Suits, Alver). This research theme carries a strong potential for application, because while the research aspect is based on the Archives, the Archives in turn will develop as a result of such research (extension of database, source publications, extension of deposit files). |
