title: Speciation and distribution of priority pollutants in Estonian environment
reg no: SF0222597s03
project type: targeted financing
subject: 1.1-1.5. Exact Sciences
2. Engineering
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics
head of project: Uuve Kirso
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2007
description: The estimation of physical and chemical properties of priority pollutants as speciation, surface catalytic reactions, interaction with co-pollutants and natural compounds (mineral and humic) will be carried out. The colloidal transfer and mobility of persistent organic compounds and toxic trace elements (heavy metals) in fresh material and aged solid wastes of oil shale industry is planned to be studied. The potential effects of pollution on the environmental quality will be evaluated, especially connected to the technical renovation of oil shale energetics. The estimation of bioavailability of hazardous technogenic pollutants is essential for a follow up investigation, e.g., to propose the convenient and cost-effective methods for utilization of the solid wastes and remediation of contaminated sites. The concentration of toxic air pollutants in aerosol particles will also be measured in urban (Tallinn) and oil shale area and the health effects of particulate matter will be evaluated.
