description: Studying the regulation of gene expression in the nervous system is of fundamental importance for understanding the determination, differentiation and maintenance of neural cells and the development and functioning of nervous system. Identification of extracellular and intracellular regulators that are important in determining the neuronal phenotype has also attracted considerable interest because of possible therapeutic importance in the treatment of several neurological diseases including Alzheimer¿s, Parkinson¿s and Huntington¿s diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, peripheral neuropathy, nervous system cancer and epilepsy. The aim of this project is to study 1. Regulation of neurotrophin gene expression in the nervous system. 2. Mammalian homologues of the Drosophila neurogenic gene neuralized . 3. The function of human plexin-B3 and molecular mechanisms underlying its action. 4. The role of the bidirectional promoter of LINE retrotransposon in human gene transcription.
