description: | The research program continues a previous project "Molecular biology0220378s98". It is aimed at proteomics studies, with particular emphasis on structure-function relationships, recognition and complex formation, which are essential cellular processes. Multifunctional proteins will be studied, which affect haemostasis, protective mechanisms in cells, angiogenesis, apoptosis and intracellular calcium regulation. The results will improve understanding on how proteins recognize their targets: calmodulin-activated enzymes, DNA, blood factors, receptors and platelets or cancer cells. The resulting knowledge is fundamental as it concerns basic forces and mechanisms which are universally involved in folding, gene regulation, biomolecular recognition and catalysis ¿ all these being important for understanding the functional integrity of normal and pathological cellular processes. The basic knowledge is indispensable for medicine and drug design. The proteins in study are potential thrombolytic and anticancer agents. The project is interdisciplinary and will be performed in cooperation between laboratories of bioorganic chemistry, chemical physics and molecular genetics at NICPB. |
