title: Molecular epidemiology and genetic characterisation of TBE, hanataviruses and hepatitis A-, B- and C-viruses in Estonia
reg no: SF0942657s04
project type: targeted financing
subject: 3. Medical Sciences
status: accepted
institution: National Institute for Health Development
head of project: Ljudmilla Priimägi
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2008
description: The genetic variety of TBE viruses, ticks in different areas will be studied (quantity of ticks, their level of infection, natural hosts and seasonal dynamics) as well as the influence of climatic and agricultural factors upon the epidemiological process, its territorial heterogenity of incidence rate. The results of the study may reveal the role of natural conditions and other factors in changing TBE virus properties. Also it planned to study hantavirus isolated in mainland of Estonia, their genetic diversity and the role of Saaremaa and Puumala hantaviruses as pathogens for humans.

In Estonia the data regarding molecular epidemiology of hepatitis viruses A, B and C are limited and based mainly on our preliminary results. The genetic variability of HAV, HBV and HCV strains, isolated from persons with different forms of infection will be studied. The epidemiological significance of genetic variants of hepatitis viruses and their influence on the clinical course and outcome of disease will be investigated.

The complition of two doctor's theses will be realised on the basis of this study.
