description: | During the past couple of decades developments in translation studies have been characterized by a movement from stressing the importance of the source text towards foregrounding the significance of the target text. This entails a shift in the concept of translation quality or 'good' translation in theory, criticism and translational practice. The general pragmatic increase in the importance of translational action has been magnified under the conditions of the 'cultural turn' within humanities. Concepts from cultural studies, post-colonial and gender studies have entered the metalanguage of translation studies. The discursive shifts in translation studies have in their turn resulted in transformations in teaching translation theory both on undergraduate and graduate levels. One of the results of the process is the paradigmatic self-regulation within translation studies, the first stage of which is manifested in creolization of metalanguages; this, however, will be followed by new regulative processes and elaboration of methodology. The main aim of the project is to analyze the state of the art of international translation studies and programmes in teaching translation, and to develop an integrated treatment of the methodology of contemporary translation studies and the theoretical basis of translation teaching. In addition to participating in an international dialogue, the requirements of Estonian higher education are taken into consideration. |
