description: Several outstanding Estonian researchers (V. Vaga, R. Loodus, J. Maiste, A. Hein and others) have been dealing with the 19th century art and art world in Estonia; that is the reason why the subject seems to be profoundly investigated. Nevertheless some important subjects and problems, such as religious painting, church architecture of historicism, historical painting and its conceptions, problems of 19th century realism, academic art, problems of romanticism, interpretation of visual thought are totally or partially neglected. Corresponding to the new trends in the art history of today, the participants of project intend to deal with above-mentioned topics. The main aim of the research work is to present new empirical material and new possibilities of interpretation of 19th century art in Estonia and in that way fill the deficiencies in our knowledge on the 19th century culture. The participants of project will elucidate in series of articles following subjects and problems: Religious painting (altar-pieces) in Estonia in the 19th century (T. Abel), Historical painting and conception of history in the figurative art of 19th century in Estonia (T. Abel), Realism in the Estonian art of 19th century (T. Abel), Academism in Estonian art in the 19th century (T. Abel), Lutheran church architecture and historicism in Estonia in the 19th century (E. Tamm), the visual thought and philosophical background of Estonian art in the first quarter of 19th century (J. Maiste), romantic thought and romantic tendencies in the 19th century Estonian art. (J. Keevallik).
The investigation of above-mentioned subjects and problems fill several shortcomings in our knowledge on the 19th century art in Estonia. Such work is an indispensable basis for the further research of history of 19th century art in Estonia. This alone can be considered to be sufficient reason to carry out the project.
