description: | Main objectives of the project are optimising treatment and prevention of periodontal diseases according to the local microbiological and pharmacological findings. 1. To determine spectrum of obligatory and potential pathogens in the periodontally healthy and diseased patients, including their possible spread in the family (on the basis of the Tartu Univeristy Dental Clinic service area which covers most of South-Estonia) 2. To evaluate the efficiency of basic periodontal instrumentation with supplemental antibiotic treatment according to the data of microbiological investigation. 3. To establish optimal, evidence based, antibiotic treatment regimen of periodontal disease, which corresponds to the spread of periodontal pathogens and their resistance to antibiotics. 4. To study the spread of the most commonly used antibiotic, metronidazole, in periodontal tissues. This knowledge would enable us to use optimal dosing of the medicament and decrease the risk of side effects. 5. Obtained data will enable us to determine the prognosis of the disease, choice of antibiotic, number and modality of treatment procedures. Additionally cost of treatment per patient can be prognosticated. Early diagnosis and appropriate prevention will decrease prevalence of periodontal diseases and its recurrence in already treated patients. |
