title: Relationships between increased storminess and vitalisation of sea-shore evolution in Estonia
reg no: ETF5763
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.11. Natural Geography (incl Meteorology, Geophysics)
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Ecology at Tallinn University of Educational Sciences
head of project: Are Kont
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2007
description: Simulation of the impact of storms of different magnitude, duration and direction and the consequent hydrodynamic conditions on the shores of different exposure, beach profile, geological and landscape structure with the aim of making trustful prognosis for the future events;(2) collection and treatment of the wind data on selected study areas and their climatological analysis for a 30 years period (1977-2006) and their comparative analysis with the earlier 30 years period datasets;(3) correlation analysis of the meteorological, hydrodynamic, topographic and geological data for modelling the storms impact on different types of coasts in different time scales.Such a complex analysis of the coastal zone dynamics and responses to global climate change would be precedent in Estonia. The expected theoretical importance of the research work consists in reliable prediction of changes in the coastal zone of Estonia in case of global climate warming and increased storminess. The practical value concerns a set of scientifically proved concepts which serve as a basis for integrated and sustainable development of coastal areas, for prevention of hazards and their catastrophic consequences but also for construction of coastal facilities.
