description: | The Project's aim is to investigate how the a new Internet-based media environment is changing practices of social and cultural communication in Estonia and how these practices contribute to the processes of social and political participation and cultural differentiation. The practices under investigation are media consumption, information seeking, political trust, civic participation, business and leisure activities etc. More specific research questions are related to a) emerging new bases of social stratification in the information society; b) contribution of personal (motivation, skills), social (gender, age etc.), cultural (language skills, values), economical (level of income, regional development) and technological (access, quality of facilities) factors in differentiation of Internet-related social and cultural practices; c) changing border between privateand public realms; d) influence of the early accomodation to the Internet-environment on the social bonds, cultural activities and communicative habits of youngsters; e) influence of Internet-based political communication on the participation in political life and public sphere; f) role of the different formats and genres of the Internet content production on the communicative practices. The results of the project will be used for completing three doctoral dissertations and three master papers. Participants are planning to publish at least six articles in the international peer reviewed journals, and to publish a collection of articles in Estonian. An important dimension of this project is opportunity for comparative analysis of Estonian and Swedish data which had been collected in 2002 using the same methodology. In addition to these quantitative data in the framework of this project are planned to conduct several qualitative surveys using ethnographic methods, case studies and in-depth interviews. |
