description: | The aim of the project is to observe the history of Hellenistic and Byzantine studies in Estonia (the end of the 19th cent. until the 1st half of the 20th cent.) and to analyze the reception of the ancient culture. The subject will promote the cooperation between the classical scholars in Estonia, Germany, Scandinavian countries and Russia. Between these countries there exists many academical contacts during the mentioned period. The research is concentrated on the activity of the internationally famous scholars and professors and on the role of their work in the development of classical studies. The work on Greek manuscripts and epigraphs, made at the University of Tartu, reflected the mainstream in classical philology at the 19th cent. The founders of the Byzantine studies A.A. Vassiljev and W. Regel were active in Tartu at the beginning of the 20th cent. Regel edited here a new journal on Byzantine studies (Vizantiiskoje obozrenie) but his work is not fully acknowledged until today. This project will help to enlighten one period in his scholarly work by analyzing the themes of his journal and by determining the place of his work in the history of science. One of the famous hellenists, Wilhelm Süss worked in Tartu in 1923-1935. This period of his life is not widely known - the work in archives in needed to get an information of his academical activity in Tartu as a professor while he prepared a new generation of Estonian classical philologists. Our project will give an opportunity to the young scholars to integrate their activity to the international scientific cooperation. The project is interdisciplinary, in addition to the literary and classical studies it will include the aspects from cultural history, philosophy and theology. In 2004 the international conference will be organized (Byzantine studies in Estonia and the contacts with Russia) where the scholars from Russia and Scandinavian countries will participate. In 2005 the book in English will be published on the given subject: Hellenic and Byzantine Studies in Estonia (19.-20. centuries). |
