description: Resistance to antibiotics among opportunistic enterobacteria is a problem. No data concerning the spread and the resistance mechanisms among opportunistic enterobacteria in Estonia are available yet.
The aim of our research is:
1. Epidemiological study to determine the spread of ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae in Estonia.
2. Theoretical-fundamental study for detecting antibiotic resistance encoding integrons in the opportunistic enterobacteria.
The antibiotic susceptibility to different antimicrobials and ESBL producing K. pneumoniae is detected using classical microbiological methods. Molecular methods (PCR-Polymerase Chain Reaction, PFGE- Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoeresis) are used in integron and resistance genes research.
Expected results:
Our epidemiologic studies give survey about the spread of ESBL producing K. pneumoniae. Theoretical-fundamental study describes the resistance mechanisms among opportunistic enterobacteria. Estimation of antibiotic resistance enables to use these data in rational antimicrobial therapy. In cooperation with Swedish Institute of Infectious Diseases and EARSS it is possible to compare the spread of isolated ESBL producing K. pneumoniae clones and the spread of integrons with the data of other European countries.
