description: Due to the smallness of Estonian economy the openness of the country as well as its companies to the outside world is practically inevitable. The enterprises' activities in foreign markets enable the Estonian economy to benefit from the increase in employment, exports and tax income. When we take into account the huge current account deficit of Estonia (in the 1st quarter 2003 it was 21.9% from GDP), then the promotion of the firms' exports is developing into a critical issue. The expansion of operations at the international level is also important for maintaining and developing the competitiveness of companies. While during the past decade the Estonian economy was characterised by the extensive inflow of foreign direct investments (FDI), then the use of these investments along with technology and knowledge transfers for the increase in production and servicing potential as well as for more active entry into foreign markets is becoming the threshold question for the decade to follow. In addition to FDI this research will investigate in greater detail the supply partnerships, logistic cooperation as well as other network relationships. It involves the in-depth analysis of the elements and development trends of outward (the export of products or services, licensing or FDI to foreign markets) as well as inward internationalisation (supply from abroad, technology and knowledge transfers etc.) along with the presentation of implications. Analysing all these aspects and some other topics like the learning processes in a company makes is possible to develop a unique understanding of the internationalisation of different firm types (like service and production enterprises).
The results of the research projects will be published in the collection of articles and in different scientific publications. During the research period, four doctoral and at least five master dissertations studying different problems concerning internationalisation should be completed. The results of the research also have a practical value. They could be used for doing recommendations to the Estonian government, firms and specialty unions for improving their policies concerning internationalisation and supporting effective cooperation between the government and the private sector
