title: Simulation of rapid manufacturing processes, materials and products
reg no: ETF5883
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.3. Mechanics
2.10. Mechanical Engineering
status: accepted
institution: Tallinn Technical University
head of project: Rein Küttner
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2006
description: Rapid Manufacturing (RM) is the use of additive manufacturing technologies to produce complex parts for small -batch production and prototypes. It should be noted that Rapid Manufacturing technologies does not require tooling to give the shape to objects. RM is now emerging as a key area of research that will play a crucial role in maintaining the economic viability of manufacturing enterprises.
The proposed project will support the development of process modelling for rapid manufacturing ptechnologies and includs two phases of developement: incremental forming of sheet metal components and rapid manufacturing of production parts with functionally graded materials. One objective of the proposed project is to understand and optimise the product value chain for small batch and prototype production. The proposed project include the development and adaptation of techniques and tools for: product and material modelling, process modelling and virtual testing to support physical process development and models of best praxise in the development of customised products

The proposed project is planned to be as national co-finnacing part of the international projects ProSheet (Industrial Fund of Nordic Countries) and NEXTRAMA (EU project for Network Centres of Exellence) Independently from the international projects, the use of results in Estonian engineering industry is planned with objective to support the implementation of the RM technologies. The participation in the international projects give to the team good possibilities for this.
