reg no: | ETF5885 |
project type: | Estonian Science Foundation research grant |
subject: |
2.5. Power Engineering |
status: | accepted |
institution: | TTU Faculty of Power Engineering |
head of project: | Rein Oidram |
duration: | 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2007 |
description: | The aim of the project is to analyse and model different aspects of cooperation between randomly fluctuating wind turbines and the rest of power system: optimal control and development of power system, real reduction of fuel consumption and emissions, operation of electric networks and quality of electricity, change of network losses, security of supply and reliability of power system containing windmills, changes in cooperation with neighbouring power systems, smoothing of fluctuating wind power production (small CHPs, storage, demand side management, etc.). Energy system development planning and emissions evaluation tasks will use International Energy Agency's MARKAL modelling software. Transients in power system will be modelled using EMTP programs and network calculations will be made using PSS/E program. The project will utilize research results of the Department of Electrical Power Engineering of TTU on optimal control and development of power systems and the results of Estonian Science Foundation grant project G4276. The experience of other countries will be analysed and used as well. The project team participates in the EU Interreg IIIb project "Wind energy in the Baltic Sea Region" and it has joined the CIRES consortium for preparing EU 6FP project proposal "The Role of CHP Plants in the Integration of Fluctuating Renewable Energy Sources". The expected results are the improved solution methods of the above listed tasks of power system considering the presence of fluctuating electricity production of windmills and the methodology for modelling of random operation of different types of wind turbines and wind parks and for compiling corresponding characteristics that can be used in the optimisation of power system operation, in the securing of power balance, in the optimisation of reserve capacity, in the control of electricity market, in the calculation of reduction of fuel consumption and emissions and in the other tasks of optimal control and development of power system. Specification of the conditions for the integration of windmills into existing power system is expected as well. |
