title: Catalytic and photocatalytic abatement of liquid and gaseous industrial pollutants
reg no: ETF5899
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.6. Chemical Engineering
2.14. Environmental Engineering
status: accepted
institution: TTU Faculty of Chemistry and Materials Technology
head of project: Sergei Preis
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2006
description: The project deals with the following subjects:
- photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of refractory organic compounds in aqueous phase (lignins and its derivatives, humic substances and direct textile dyes);
- combination of PCO with subsequent biological oxidation;
- gas-phase PCO of malodorous sulphur-containing compounds;
- gas-phase catalytic hydrolysis of halogenated volatile hydrocarbons over zero valent iron.

The objective of the project is to acquire an innovative knowledge in photocatalysis and catalysis application to the decomposition of pollutants discharged by paper mills, landfills and textile enterprises. The project is conducted in co-operation with Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, Clausthal Technical University, Germany, and University of Colorado at Boulder, USA. The project experimental program is carried out by a young doctor, a doctoral-, two MSc- and one BSc-student expected to successfully obtain the desired degrees.
