title: Usage of mined out areas
reg no: ETF5913
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.4. Mining
status: accepted
institution: Tallinn Technical University
head of project: Ingo Valgma
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2006
description: U Several mines have been closed or abandoned in recent years in Estonia. Geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions have not been taken into account in all cases. It has lead to the degradetion of sevaral buldings and constructions. Hypotheses of using minewater as energy accumulator under dence population has not been investigated yet. In addition the problems of closing of surface mines need to be organised. Limestone and gravel quarries and clay pits are used for utilising or storaging industrial waste. Up to now it has been done after one-sided evaluations and the regulation is not taking into account technogenic geomechanical phenomena. The purpose of the study is to make conception of sustainable usage of mined areas. To give recommendations and to give reasons for planning conditions for successful closure of the mines. This allows to change large areas of mined areas to suitable farmland or building areas. Minewater could be used for supply or drinking water after selfcleaning. It is possible to use underground space for storages after counting with hydrogeological conditions. Mines could be used as reservuars for industrial water, accumulators of energy. As the result of the research conception of sustainable usage of mined areas will be created. Evaluation of using mines as reservuars or accumulators will allow to start new test or pilot projects. The results will explane the amplitude of change in groundwater dynamics and chemistry in cases of mining and closing of mines. The expected results of the project are useful for those who work with land and earth crust.
