title: Analyses of LHC CMS data and applications to infotechnology
reg no: ETF5935
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.3. Physics
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics
head of project: Martti Raidal
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2007
description: Physics can be developed only in close collaboration between theory and experiment. In Estonia, unfortunately, experimental high energy physics is practically non-existing at the moment. The aim of this project is to create an Estonian Team of young new generation physicists at the LHC CMS experiment which will participate in preparation of the physics program of CMS, modeling of the detector and simulations of new physics. Later the Team will participate in analyses of real experimental data. Based on the existing Linux PC-s at NICPB, the aim of the project is to form a high performance parallel cluster of them which will be connected to the CERN EU DataGrid via the Nordic NorduGrid link in Helsinki. Globus-Toolkit, de facto standard middlewear in Grid technology, required cluster middleware as well as all CERN detector and physics simulation software will be installed. The physics program of this project is to participate in close collaboration with other CMS teams in modeling new physics processes (Higgs boson production, supersymmetric particles) at CMS, and also participation in testing the CERN DataGrid by transferring and analyzing the simulated data from CERN. Those are directly related to preparation for real physics runs at LHC starting at 2007. All the results of the project will be reported in international conferences and published in international journals. The project involves two graduate students whos dissertations are related to the results of the project. Although the results of the project will be in high energy physics, its developments in Grid technology in Estonia can in longer run be applicable in other branches of computational physics, in quantum chemistry, molecular biology etc.
