project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant

description: Heritology is the new science in the European science map. There are over 24,000 cultural monuments, over 200 museums and some ten restoration centres in Estonia but the issues related to heritage protection have not been dealt with on a scientific level. The target of the project is the following:

- Map Estonian heritage landscape; define and substantiate the principles of formation on a contemporary scientific level.
- Describe the new scientific discipline, create the basis and structure of the research conception, train the required scientific staff. Establish preconditions for international cooperation (organisation of scientific conferences).
- Development of a centre and a corresponding network of didactic work in the field of heritage conservation and restoration in Estonia.

Target for 2004: form the research tradition of heritage protection and establish conditions for future research. For this purpose a new long-term substantive project basing on this year's work will be submitted for the year 2004. This will also justify the inclusion of a number of young scientists and postgraduates to the project.

Project includes all three themes of heritology:

1) Museology
2) Heritage conservation (archaeological monuments, building monuments, complexes, cultural landscapes, areas with milieu of great value)
3) Conservation and restoration

As a result of the project the background system, contents, topics, methods, structure, tasks and various cooperation forms will be specified and preparations will be made for the beginning of systematic research work in the field of heritology from 2005. As a result of the project three scientific publications in the field of museology, heritage conservation and restoration will also be published in 2007.
