reg no: ETF5964
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6.4. Folklore
status: accepted
institution: Estonian Literary Museum
head of project: Kristin Kuutma
duration: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2007
description: This project focuses on the ethnographic writings by Estonian folklorists in the early 20th century. This is a reflexive, meta level analysis of Estonian folkloristics based on the study of its key figures and their writings, in order to introduce recent topics and theories that are instrumental in modern cultural critique.

The main objectives of the project:
- to study ethnographic writings (fieldwork diaries, correspondence, personal notes and published writings) from the early 20th century that reflect the history of Estonian folkloristics;
- to propose new questions from the perspective of cultural critique, and cover "the white spots" in earlier research;
- to arrange scholarly events ( 2 seminars, an international conference) to discuss the analysis of the history of folkloristics from the perspective of cultural critique;
- to establish a basis for the meta level reflexive analysis, which could be applied to other periods of history.

The results of the project:
- archive material on the history of folkloristics will be organized, and Oskar Loorits¿ personal archive will be transferred to Estonia;
- the unpublished material at the Folklore and Cultural Archives will be made available;
- an international network of researchers will be established, and a thematic dialogue will be started;
- scholarly articles will be published, as well as seminar and conference proceedings;
- a graduate course will be designed, based on the collected texts.
