description: | The proposed Project forms a national part in the framework of comparative study on mortality development in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, undertaken by an international team. The Project involves in-depth orientation as well as aspiration for synthesis, particularly with respect to comparative European perspective, with main focus in two directions: (1) analysis of long-term mortality trends in the Baltic region, including the period of mortality stagnation and (2) analysis of cause-specific mortality, including levels, structure, age pattern etc, for the first time in the Baltics. In terms of data, the proposed Project draws on harmonised census and vital statistics, adding itself a signigicant data-generating contribution. From the viewpoint of funding, the international study builds on national contributions (no centralised funding is available) from each country and the aim of the proposed Project is to secure the Estonian participation. The Project results in a monograph on mortality development in the Baltic countries. The Project is aimed at the study of timing - the phenomenon which influence on the population scene during the past centuries can be compared to demographic transition itself - in the Estonian setting, building on national subprojects in the framework of several European comparative studies. |
