description: | In the present day Estonia standing on the threshold of uniting process with EU low evaluation of national sentiment or indefiniteness in this rises again the overall question about Estonian identity. The aim of the project is to study this subject on the wider background observing both the forming process and popular mentalities what are visible in the folkloric data collected since the end of 19th century and processes and values today. This way the diachronic approach is connected with analyses of official statements and popular theories in the present day Estonia. In addition to analyses of media and folklore carried out by senior personnel (Madis Arukask, Pille Runnel, Leen Rahnu) and degree student Mait Talts the project also deals with the influence of different aspects of local milieu to the contemporary processes (degree student Jan Seepter), how the national identity is manifested in civil rituals (degree student Marko Veisson), and how the identity of local community can be seen via artefacts (degree student Kristi Jõeste). Results of different studies listed above will be synthesised by Anzori Barkalaja whose main subject in the project is identity mechanisms and their influence to the cultural processes. Senior personnel of the project between themselves are agreeing that in the history of modern Estonia the imported ideas expressed by the voice of power do not address effectively more inert popular way of thinking. The aim of this project is to open up the role of "silent" voice or, in the absence of it, to explain corresponding developments. The project offers possibilities for applied solutions in social, cultural and economical spheres as the social capital based on the balanced cultural processes is precondition for the functioning of sane society. |
