title: Nutrition conditions and their effect on the lignification processes of Scots pine in South-West Estonian dune forest
reg no: ETF6022
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: Research Institute of Forestry at EAU
head of project: Malle Mandre
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2008
description: Objective
With the help of comparative-analytical investigations the following aspects of tree growth on coastal dunes under natural stress conditions (shortage of water and nutrients) will be estimated:
* Dependence of lignification processes on environmental conditions;
* Dependence of the concentration of the main components of the cell wall (lignin, hemicelluloses, cellulose and pectins) on the quantitative and qualitative amounts of nutrients in soil and their accumulation in tree tissues under varying conditions at different heights on dunes;
* Dependence of biomass formation and increment of trees on the intensity of lignification.

Expected results
* Additional information on qualitative and quantitative peculiarities of the ecosystem on coastal dunes will be obtained.
* The results will provide basic scientific knowledge about the relationships of lignification and mineral nutrition of trees, causal relationships between biomass formation and lignification under the relatively extreme growth conditions (shortage of water and nutrients) on dunes.
* From the applied aspect information on lignification of trees under different growth conditions and quality of wood is very important in the forest industry. The conclusions drawn can be applied in forestry in the interpretation of wood quality.

At least five papers will be published in international and in Estonian publications.
