description: | Wild berry cultivation is becoming a source of additional income or even the basic field of activity for the Estonian farmers. The task of the planned research programme will be to investigate the quality of the crops and study the influence of wild berry cultures on environment as the blueberry and lingonberry plantations are mostly founded on cut peat fields. The constant need to improve the cultivation methods of blueberry and arctic bramble as these problems have been actively studied only during the recent five years or so, which is a very short time for elaborating the agro technical features of a culture. As a result of the research the following problems should be solved and the following questions answered: influence of different cultivation methods on the quality of berries and development of plants, do the wild berry cultures help to stop the disintegration of peat on cut peat fields? how different are the chemical properties of the blueberry seedlings and how to use it in breeding, how early should the rejuvenating of blueberry plantations start, are the sorts of high bush blueberry suitable for growing in Estonia, which way of propagation should be preferred: the vegetative or the meristeme based way, are the local arctic bramble clones usable as garden culture, is breeding of cloudberry culture possible as interest towards its cultivation is high in the whole world, The expectation of the researchers is to breed the first named lingonberry and blueberry varieties. |
