description: | Yield and biomass production ability of hybrid aspen (Populs x wettsteinii Hämet-Ahti) as a new species in Estonian conditions is studied in young (5-9 years after establishment) plantations on abandoned agricultural lands on different soils. The growth performance of hybrid aspens is compared to local deciduous tree species of the same age in similar growing conditions. Relations between the growth rate of hybrid aspens and nutrient concentrations in the soil and in the leaves are analysed. The network of experimental plots that will be created and re-measurements in the future should give an opportunity to describe the process of biomass accumulation in a hybrid aspen plantation throughout the rotation period and to monitor the changes in vegetation cover and soil conditions. Gene samples will be taken from the best trees and DNA analysis will be performed to determine the best clones in Estonian climate and soil conditions. An experimental area will be established for detailed studies of formation of foliage and root system, nutrient cycling and accumulation of hybrid aspens. Methods that the working group has used for studying other deciduous tree species will be applied. The results of the study allow to develop Estonian natural resources management politics and form the opinion of the suitability and effects of short rotation forestry on Estonian natural environment, landscape, land-use, socio-economic and socio-cultural aspects. Practical aim of the study is to offer recommendations for landowners about deciding over the suitability of the site, establishing and tending the plantation. Economic calculations about the profitability of the investment for establishing a hybrid aspen plantation will be generated. |
