title: Periodisation of the development of the Estonian spiritual language (up to the publication of the full Bible in 1739)
reg no: ETF6067
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Estonian Language
head of project: Kristiina Ross
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2008
description: The aim of the Project is to explicate the genesis of the Estonian spiritual language. The Project is a natural follow-up of some earlier grant studies done by the Applicant, notably, the ESF Grants Nos. 2759 "Textual analysis of the early Estonian Bible translations" (1997-2000) and 4944 "Hebrew impact on the Estonian language" (2001-2004). For the purpose of this Project, spiritual language is defined as a more or less standardised version of a language, which has been used to render the Christian worldview. Consequently, the study addresses the process of the development of Estonian into a civilised language capable of expressing European trains of thought. Comparative analysis of expressions and terms will be used to define the role of different periods of cultural history in the development of spriitual Estonian. Relying on the previous results and the working hypothesis the study is planned to be centred upon three main problems:
(a) spiritual Estonian in the Middle Ages;
(b) development of the new-testamentary discourse during the late decades of the 17th century;
(c) the role of the full Bible of 1739 from the point of view of linguistic creativity and the development of a linguistic norm.
