description: | As stated in the title, the principal goal of the project is to study the role of Estonian-language and foreign language printed matter in the raising of national consciousness and in the consolidation of the nation. The current project aims to broaden the range of preexisting studies of the social tasks and functions of national printed matter (books, periodicals, serial publications, brochures, and cartography) by working through unknown and little-known archival material (print runs, dissemination, and spheres of influence, publicity and censorship, and most broadly the subject of reading models). Thus the project aims to test new research perspectives and approaches in Estonian humanities and social sciences. In the course of implementing the project the functioning of printed matter will be used to characterize the development of Estonian national culture as a whole, to broach the subject of Estonians' culture consumption, to describe regional contributions to its mosaicity, and changes at the level of the author and the consumer. Through the functioning of the printed word we attempt to delineate bridges between Estonian culture and other cultures as well as changes and breakthroughs in our thinking from the beginning of the 19th century through the birth of the Estonian republic. Special attention will be given to the role of periodical publications in the consolidation of the nation. Alongside other publications maps also played an important role in the formation and broadening of a visual world-picture. As a carrier of practical information the map is also an image for spatial thinking, an artefact. Most significantly, printed cartography represents the world-picture of a specific era. Within the framework of the project a seminar will be organized on the spheres of influence of Estonian printed matter, as well as at least one international conference and the publication of a collection of papers. One of the fruits of the project will be the digitalization of the Estonian Literary Museum's Archival Library's map collection and its integration into the dea-database. This will make the entire cartography collection generally accessible through the internet. |
