description: This is an international interdisciplinary research project on Estonian - Danish relations in the 13th - 14th centuries. The main task is to overcome at least on some extent the present understanding of the danisg period using written sauces and archaeological material.
13 th - 14th cent is in estonian society the period of transformation from ancient (and mostly pagan) society to feudalism. The results of the transformation were different in Southern Estonia, on Saaremaa and North- Estonia. In the south that suffered most, the local elite was killed, lost its power and dissapeared. On Saaremaa the transformation was smooth and local chieftans became a part of the feudal society with the rights of self-governing. In Northern Estonia under Danish rule the development was smething special. The main goal of the project is to find out the specific features of the transformation from ancient society to feudalism in Estonia under danish rule. What were the relations between the original society and the Danish Crown? Was this an everlasting confrontation or co-operation? How did the new rule influence the local settlement and if, then can this be registrated in material culture?
The participants are of different cultural and educational background that provides excellent opportunity for usin both Danish and Estonian artefacts and written sauces in explaining the historical phenomenon of Estonia during the Danish Rule.
