title: Genetic diversity, differentiation and relationship of Estonian farm animal breeds
reg no: ETF6158
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Animal Husbandry at EAU
head of project: Haldja Viinalass
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2007
description: Main aim of the study is to investigate the genetic resources of Estonian horse breeds based on DNA markers (microsatellites and mtDNA markers) and to analyse the genetic variation of Estonian horse breeds on global scale - comparing Estonian horse breeds to other breeds in the world, primarily to relative breeds in Baltic states, North-West of Russia and northern Europe. The origin of horse breeds will be elucidated based on variations of horse mtDNA.
Also to find molecular markers that could be used to distinguish between Estonian (horse and cattle) and foreign breeds. In order to verify/exclude the belonging of an individual within breed the optimal nomenclature of markers are being searched for to enhance the efficiency of genotyping.
Further to carry out screening on the distribution of polymorphic PrP types among Estonian sheep breeds herewith to lower the risk of TSE by favouring haplotypes affecting TSE resistance in the breeding process.
Based on the results, scientifically argued recommendations for direct usage in breeding programs and preservation of endangered breeds will be presented.
