description: | Nano design and nanotechnology is expected to play a key role in a wide spectrum of industry sectors including manufacturing, information technology, electronics, and healthcare. Both theoretical and practical results of the project can find immediate application for material production, estimation of material lifetime and for developing of new materials and/or their properties. General objectives of the project are as follows: a. Investigation and measurement of fundamental material properties at the micro- and nano-scale (elastic/plastic and thermo-mechanical properties, hardness, micro-toughness, grain boundary mobility, etc.). b. Development of basic measurement metrology at the micro- and nano- scale for the determination of bulk and surface material properties and for process monitoring. c. Establishment of the generic relationships between processing, structure, and properties by developing analytical, statistical, and computational tools to elucidate and characterize these correlations. The information obtained will further our understanding the material behavior and thus allow developing of materials with special properties. Results of the nanostructural design may be the ways to tailor properties to enhance performance, reliability and durability of materials or even develop new materials with required properties. Considering main aspects of modern industrial societies it is a very urgent challenge to keep Estonian science competitive and on a leading position with respect to scientific and technological know-how in the field of nanotechnologies. |
