title: Baltoscandian carbonate basin evolution and events during the Kunda and Aseri (early and middle Darriwilian) time
reg no: ETF6207
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Leho Ainsaar
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2008
description: Ordovician period was a time of rapid environmental changes. This study is focused to evolution of temperate-climate Baltoscandian carbonate basin during the Middle Ordovician Kunda and Aseri time (Darriwilian). Previous studies have shown the occurrence of series of faunal, geochemical and sedimentological changes, but relations between of those are not clear yet.
Three main activities are planned: 1) to describe the microfaunal (ostracode) changes at Volkhov-Kunda and Kunda-Aseri stage boundaries, especially in the basinal sections with no gaps; 2) to determine the extent and age of the Middle Darriwilian stable isotope excursion; 3) to compile the sequence stratigraphic model for the Kunda and Aseri stages in Baltoscandia. The material can be collected from outcrops and core sections of Estonia, Latvia, NW Russia and Sweden.
The environmental events may be related to climatic changes (incl. glaciation on continents) or to tectonic events. The role and interaction of the climatic, eustatic and tectonic factors in the studied environmental events can be studied. Comparison of the Baltoscandian data with data from other regions allows to explain regional or global background of the Darriwilian environmental events.
