reg no: ETF6236
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Reet Kasik
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2008
description: The present research project is a continuation to the grant project "Linguistic Text Analysis" carried out 2001-2004. A framework for analysing the language of texts was developed and applied when analysing texts of different types. The present project focuses on studying media texts although analysis of texts of other types is used for comparison. The aim is to find out how media texts construct meanings and what kind of meanings are inserted into the texts in this way. Advertising texts will be used as material for comparison (in order to compare the ways texts influence) as well as texts written by students (in order to compare the influence of media language on the language use of students).
The texts of news and opinion stories will be studied.
One of the aims of the research is to analyse and compare the strategies, macrostructures and intertextuality typical of media texts. The second aim is to analyse the linguistic choices of the texts and the ways of representing reality in order to find out the ideologies, attitudes and modalities the texts carry.
The practical aim of the project is text cultivation. The research will attempt to distinguish the textual features important to pay attention to in text cultivation in order that the result would be a clear, unambiguous and comprehensible text.
The planned duration of the research project is four years. At the end of each year a seminar will be held on text analysis and both scientific and popular articles will be written on the language use of the media. The mid-term results of the research will be presented as students' bachelor's or master's theses. A doctoral thesis on text analysis will be prepared and a monograph summarising the results of the research will be published at the end of the project.
