title: Relationships between distribution of faunal assemblages and sequence stratigraphic framework in the Ordovician and Silurian of Estonia and adjacent areas
reg no: ETF6460
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Tõnu Meidla
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2008
description: Present project is aimed at detailed investigation of micropalaeontological data in sequence stratigraphic framework, revealing the relationships of faunal dynamics, basin development and other recorded oceanographic events. We intend to test two hypotheses: (1) the modelled biodiversity pattern throughout the systems tracts within a sequence (Holland, 2000) can be recognised in real palaeontological data sets; (2) the distribution of taphocoenoses in the Middle Ordovician to Silurian sedimentary succession in Baltoscandia follows the unconformity-bound units. We plan to integrate detailed investigation of the faunal dynamics in sequence stratigraphical framework, based on contemporaneous systematic approach, further development of the system of unconformity-bound units in the area, continuation of the palaeoenvironmental studies and further monographic studies of ostracods. The project is based on materials from Estonia and adjacent areas, it is related to the target financed project No 0182531s03 "Environmental indicators, palaeobiology of communities and taphonomy" (PI T. Meidla, 2003-2007) and to the PhD and MSc studies at the Institute of Geology, University of Tartu.
