title: Russian estonian cross cultural relations: The history of the Formatoin of the Estonian culture image
reg no: ETF6469
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: Narva College of the University of Tartu
head of project: Jelena Nõmm
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2007
description: The main goal of our research is to describe the ways of formation of the image of Estonian culture in the minds of representatives of Russian culture, beginning from the 16th century and up until the current situation. The research will allow to identify stereotypes in Russian culture concerning the ethnic peculiarities of Estonians and the mechanisms responsible for integrating imaginations of a foreign culture into the system of the own culture. The analysis of the sources will reveal and document not only these stereotypes but also the reasons for their development (ethnic, religious, social- political and others).
The topic of the research is largely unstudied in Estonia. This scientific project belongs to the field of interdisciplinary research. Realizing it means to make use of the terminology from other disciplines such as history, ethno-psychology, literature studies, semiotics and sociology. The methods particular to those sciences will be used to analyze various documents (chronicles, memoirs, diaries, letters, essays, newspapers articles, scientific literature, textbooks, etc.). The methodology used corresponds to the western tradition of research in the field of cross-cultural communications, as well as to the traditions of cultural research of the Tartu/Moscow semiotic school.

This research project aims at creating a larger knowledge of Russian-Estonian cross-cultural communication, as well as neutralize social conflicts based on ethnicity and culture, and will serve as a platform for multi-cultural education in Estonia. We hope that the results of the research will allow for a change of ethnic policy of the Estonian state, and find mechanisms to encourage the interest in Estonian language and culture amongst non-native Estonians.
