title: Nomination and Anonymity in the Culture
reg no: ETF6484
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Ülle Pärli
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2008
description: The current projekt roots from the previous scientific project ("Proper name in contemporary culture") conducted by Ülle Pärli. That program actualised the topic of proper names as an aspect of describing Estonian culture (proper name as a bearer of mythological consciousness in contemporary culture), and inside it there shaped out new research trends and cleared fundamental problems. Basing the current project on theories of name in the analytic philosophy, linguistics and semiotics (indication mechanisms, analysis of meaning), and keeping in mind studies of the name that have activated in e.g.anthropology, cognitive psychology, and criticism of ideology, we will work out our own approach. Through the analysis of different cultural practices (political rhetoric, creation of cultural value and canon , the complicated nature of artistic texts in terms of general and proper names, "bringing to light" and "leaving in shadow" in cultural self-description, material singulars and "trash", processes of expel from culture etc) we will demonstrate the mutually conditioned nature of the processes of identification and categorisation, particulation and generalisation in culture. A goal is also to prove the unilaterality of those treatments of the name that rigidly differentiate the indication and signification mechanisms of proper and general names, or, v.v., tend to unify them. It is exactly the analysis of different ways of naming and the creation of anonymity that allows to understand that every distinction presumes the existence of a background , that in the use of proper names there are features of general naming, and that general names need possibilities of "embodiment" for functioning.
Concrete studies will result in the grant holder's and participants' scientific presentations at international conferences and publications. There will be organised a conference in Tartu, which will center at the topic of the project, to publish two collections of articles and to create a web environment for the communication between members of the international work group. One target is the creation of an efficient research group of young authors that would be active also in international communication and allow to apply also for an international grant. International cooperation is especially necessary, since it is exactly the comparative analysis that is productive for the treatment of the current topic.
