title: The Role of the Media in Social and Political Integration of Transnationalising Society
reg no: ETF6526
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
status: accepted
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Peeter Vihalemm
duration: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2008
description: The aim of the current project is to specify under which conditions the media can contribute to the increase or decrease of the social cohesion of Estonian society in the context of transnationalisation (internationalisation): in relation to the continued transformation of Estonian social space in entering to the common economic and political space of the European Union and in moving to global consumer society and network society.
In cooperation with target financed project "Formation of the 21st Century Media Society in Estonia" and other grants of the Department of Journalism and Communication at the University of Tartu it is planned to repeat the representative sociological survey "Me, the world and the media" in the autumn of 2005 in order to collect data about changes in values, evaluations, living conditions and practices of media usage during the last three years. Realisation of the project is connected with participation in the EU 6th Framework Programme, in a common project of 10 universities "Adequate Information Management in Europe" (AIM), oriented to analysis of formation of European public space. According to the schedule of the AIM, in the spring of 2006 there is planned to carry out a comparative content analysis on representations of the EU in Estonian media and interviewing members of audience in order to learn about the differences in the reception of texts.
Besides there are planned to carry out several qualitative surveys and media analysis, in order to examine identity construction of different social subjects and representations of the relations between them in media texts.
