description: Liver transplantation has gained general recognition during the last 40 years and has developed from experiments performed at single research units in developed countries to an established treatment method of choice for several advanced liver diseases.Rapid progress of liver transplantation in the Nordic countries, particulary Finland, from 1982, active cooperation between the clinics of surgery of Helsinki and Tartu Universities as well as Estonia's need ( 4 - 6 liver transplantations per year ) inspired us to solve this issue. The Council of the TU Faculty of Medicine approved the TU Liver Transplantation Programme for 1996 - 1999 completed with succesful adult liver transplantations in Estonia from1999. At the same time every year 2-3 children in Estonia died due to congenital liver diseases without any change. The result of adult liver transplantation is meaningful for children with congenital liver diseases only in case scentific activity on the field of transplantation in Tartu University Clinicsis continued.
The project "Necessity and possibilities of pediatric liver transplantation in Estonia" was developed
in order to
1) evaluate the real existence of congenital liver diseases that leads children to end stage liver insufficiency in Estonia.
2) evaluate the real need for pediatric liver transplantation in Estonia on the basis of internationally accepted indications.
3) propagate organ donation in Estonia as a contribution to life after death.
4) to solve the technical issue of pediatric liver transplantation and introduce pediatric liver transplantation in Estonia
5) inform society about the needs and the possibilities of pediatric liver transplantation in Estonia
